THE MOST HEROIC ANIMALS OF 2010

Magic, a four-year-old miniature horse from Florida, is world famous. She won The AARP magazine’s 2010 Heroic Pet contest after inspiring an elderly assisted living resident to speak for the first time in three years. Now publications from all over the world have written about Magic, and she’s set to be the heroine of a children’s book. “She now gets hundreds of e-mails from children who want to see her,” one of her handlers said. “For many, it’s their final wish.” Like the 27 other miniature horses at Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, Magic is housebroken and is trained to walk up and down stairs, and she remains calm around loud noises.

1. Bandit

Bandit prevented lives of a family when toxic black smoke was filling the house

i

A Pomeranian-poodle mix called Bandit deserves to be listed as heroic pet because he prevented a tragedy and saved lives of DiStefani family from Mays Landing, New Jersey, on the night when toxic black smoke was filling the house. That night, a hair brush was being sterilized in a pot of boiling water when it began to melt and eventually black smoke filled the house while the family slept. Fortunately, Bandit was there. It ran into the bedroom and started to bark and jump on Mrs. DiStefani’s chest until she awoke. Mrs. DiStefani later said that she believe in miracles and she thought there was a reason the dog has been here. She called Bandit ”hero and a miracle dog.” And of course, Bandit was rewarded with a chicken for his birthday by his proud owner.

Angel leaped into action and threw herself between the young boy and the wild cat that was charging at him. Angel and the lethal predator fought under the family’s deck, while the boy’s mother called 911 for help. Police was nearby and was at the scene within a minute. They killed the cougar, and after a few moments of suspense, the dog coughed back to life. The lucky boy can say without a doubt that he has his own personal guardian angel.

4. Rabbit

Buddy is a German shepherd who convinced us the dog indeed is man’s best friend. Buddy’s owner Ben Heinrichs was working in the family shop when a heater touched off a fire fueled by chemicals in the shop. As the fire grew, Ben ran out and told Buddy: “We need to get help.” Although Buddy had never been trained, he ran out, finding Alaskan Trooper and guided him to the blaze. At the end, the shop was destroyed and a shed was heavily damaged, but Buddy managed to save the house. Ben said he had known the dog was clever and brave because this wasn’t the first time Buddy helped him. Earlier, the dog two times chased bears away when his owner was fishing.

6. Bhoori

A woman form Pakistan was miraculously saved by her "swimming cow" called Bhoori

A woman form Pakistan was miraculously saved by her “swimming cow” called Bhoori, which carried her for hours through surging waters before leading her to safety. 70-year-old Zainab Bibi was sleeping in the courtyard near the cattle pen when suddenly water came from nowhere and entered her home. Her sons and their failies were on the roof when she found herself in the midst of flood waters that were dragging her into the deep. Moments later Bhoori came from nowhere and Zinab clung to the cow’s neck. They were floating around and many hours later Zinab finally felt ground under her feet. It started as a routine weekend training run in Long Island for a police dog named Blue but it has become a top-priority search for a possible serial killer. Police officer John Mallia and his German shepherd called Blue were walking along Ocean Parkway between Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach when the dog’s tail perked up. The police officer immediately found a human skeleton and this discovery encouraged police to continue searching the area. Over the next few days, three other skeletons were subsequently detected by Blue. When the dogs started charging towards her, Cherry tried to fight them off, but they knocked her down couple of times. Just while she was thinking that the situation is hopeless, her cat Lima burst onto the scene and jumped into the fray. Cherry’s husband later said that the cat came out of the bushes, and scratched one dog and started hissing at it. The dogs turned their attention to Lima and Mr. Woods was able to grab his wife and pull her inside the house. While Cherry Woods was recovering, Lima was keeping watch.
